Collection (1740-1985) including correspondence, legal and financial papers, estate papers, and volumes concerning several eastern North Carolina families. Correspondence addressed to Manning (1939, 1947-1974) documents his interest in Martin County history and his research on transportation in North Carolina and other southern states. The bulk of Manning's papers consists of materials related to the history of various Martin County families. These items, mainly financial and legal papers, are arranged alphabetically by family name. |

Biographical note | Francis M. Manning (1903-1982), son of William and Sarah Roberson Manning, graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1926. Manning wrote many articles on historical topics and, with W. H. Booker, edited three volumes on Martin County history. |
